you wanted one cookie. we made you buy six.
Local cookie brand admits to upselling 8 out of 10 customers; confesses everything, opens café
bijeshwori, kathmandu — This is not our first batch. Before sayummy's, we were an online cookie brand that ran for one year and sold 1,000+ cookies. Then the ovens went quiet. One year later, we are back, as sayummy's.
the box problem
Here's what nobody tells you about selling cookies online: 8 out of 10 of you only wanted one or two. And sending a rider across Kathmandu with one cookie costs more than the cookie. So the minimum was a box.
You wanted a snack. We sold you a commitment. Every box took a hand-crafted sales pitch. No AI. Just charm, persistence and mild begging. We are honestly not sure we could pull it off today.
breaking: stall embarrasses website
Then came LA Festival. One stall. No box rule. People smelled the cookies, bought one, walked off, came back for another.
One event: 200+ cookies. One whole year online: 1,000+. You can do the math. We did, and it hurt.
Lesson learned: cookies don't want to be delivered. They want to be picked up warm.
a half-baked plan
New plan: a tiny takeaway window. Walk in, grab one cookie, walk out happy. No box. No pitch.
Kathmandu real estate read the plan and laughed. Even a small room wanted ₨25,000+ a month. For a window. For cookies.
we kneaded more space
So we went bigger. A full café. And a full café needs a full menu, so the cookie got roommates: coffee, breakfast, burgers, brownies and snacks we hope you'll like.
The good news: you can finally buy one cookie. Warm. Fresh. No box. No sales pitch.
The bad news is printed below.
“the rent is high. please come.”
coming soon
The box-era cookies are coming back, rebranded, under new management. (Also us.) Watch this space.
why "sayummy's"?
three intentional layers — every one of them deliberate, every one of them true
say + yummy
the wordplay on the surface. "say it, yummy." people read it and say it out loud — that's the whole point.
caste + culture
the founder's caste name is sayami — pronounced almost identically. newari heritage, quietly embedded into the brand.
newari language
in newari, "sa" means yummy. so sa + yummy says yummy twice, in two languages, in one word.
a decision that's also true. a pun that's also heritage. an english name that's also newari.
that's the dna of the place: personal, playful, local to kathmandu but universal in humour — and it rewards the people who ask why that name.
